Introduction We are excited to announce that the Physics of Life Network (PoLNET) and BioImagingUK have received funding through the BBSRC’s Enhancing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in BBSRC-Funded Networks initiative. With support from the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS), Institute of Physics (IoP), and other partners, this initiative aims to break down barriers and tackle underrepresentation in science. This funding is a collective effort to create more inclusive research communities, ensuring diverse perspectives, skills, and expertise are embraced.
Key Focus Areas of the Initiative The initiative targets specific areas of underrepresentation and aims to make a tangible impact:
Gender Disparity in Conference Presentations
Providing tailored presentation skills training and coaching to help women scientists build confidence and reduce presentation anxiety.
Socioeconomic Barriers for Undergraduates
Offering financial support and pre-sourced project opportunities through summer studentships for students from low-income backgrounds.
Challenges for Parents and Carers
Launching a carers’ bursary scheme to support scientists with caregiving responsibilities in attending professional meetings.
Opportunities for Members of PoLNET and BioImagingUK Communities As part of this grant, we are offering several opportunities for UK-based members of the Physics of Life and BioImagingUK networks:
Presentation Skills Training
Open call for women who want to enhance their presentation skills through workshops and coaching sessions. Further details are below.
Carers' Bursaries
20 bursaries of up to £500 each will be offered to help scientists with caregiving responsibilities attend professional events. Further details are below.

Presentation Skills Coaching Program for Women
We are thrilled to announce the launch of a Presentation Skills Coaching Program aimed at empowering women in bioimaging and biophysics to excel in scientific presentations and conference talks. This initiative is made possible thanks to funding from UKRI-BBSRC, in partnership with PoLNET, BioImagingUK, RMS, and IoP.
About the Program This specialised coaching program aims to address the gender gap in conference presentations by offering tailored training to boost confidence and help women advance their careers.
